COLLECTING, SORTING AND STORING SEEDS
W.I. members , and other people from the local community have been out collecting lots of different seeds that can be used for the well dressing. Stella Day, Beryl Slater and Sylvia Griffiths collected hundreds of alder cones (bobs) from the trees in the Millennium wood, and then painstakingly sorted them into different sizes before storing them in the large sweet jars shown below. Carol Benbow, Stella Day, Ros Langford and Pam Trafford met at Pam's house to sort out beech nuts from the mast, and carefully cut and store honesty seeds from huge bundles donated by Beryl Roe. The seeds have been stored in huge sweet jars together with small bags of silica gel crystals to prevent them from going mouldy. Various other seeds of unusual shapes and sizes have also been collected by W.I. members. Thanks must go to Pam for allowing us to store all the dried material at her house.

Michelle's first attempt at 'petalling'.
Michelle Justice wanted to experience the skill of petalling, and so on 6th June 2012, we created a Jubilee Crown design in clay on a small board for her to practice on. Michelle's commendable efforts can be seen below with the crown design shown part complete after 3 hours of work. Box leaves, white chrysanths, and lentils were used to effect. On the 7th June to help promote the Croxton well dressing, this design was taken to the Staffordshire County Show where members of the public were encouraged to complete the petalling of the design using red carnations, lentils, wool, blue stattice and further gold and white chrysanths.
Garden Guild Presentation
On 23rd November Ros Langford gave a presentation about the Croxton well dressing planned for July 7th 2012, to the Croxton and Broughton Garden Guild. Ros had prepared a demonstration of 'petalling' using an owl design in clay on a wooden tray, (shown below). Garden Guild members were encouraged to have a go at completing one of the wings using ash seeds; use wool to create text, or insert hydrangea petals in the back ground. Members were very enthusiastic about the project and many volunteered their help in 2012. On behalf of the Harvest Supper Committee, John Day presented the W.I. with a £50 donation to help towards funding the well dressing project. We are very grateful for their generosity. We have also heard recently that the Charnes Estate will be supporting the project with provision of materials, and we thank Mrs Hall for her kindness and support. |
